We are FluidityWorks

FluidityWorks is a UK-based independent software studio. We deliver specialist contract engineering services and drive innovation through open source and proprietary projects.

We believe in Fluidity: software that flows effortlessly into new problem spaces. For us, fluidity means low coupling, high cohesion and the engineering disciplines that celebrate this: Domain Driven Design (DDD), Strategic Design, Event-Driven Architectures, and more. For others, fluidity means robust engineering, systems that are a pleasure to maintain, and the perpetual freedom to grow.

Our Story

Our founder's commercial journey began with C++, writing for Nokia's Symbian OS in the 2000s: clock cycles were scarce, memory was even scarcer, and every byte earned its place. A few of those early lines shipped inside apps like Shazam and Push-to-Talk, running on millions of devices and powering countless magical moments. The principles forged in mobile carried through a move into C# and .NET, eventually leading to over a decade working in the Healthcare sector. Here, a long-cultivated understanding of effective software development underpinned their role of technical lead for the company's largest-ever infrastructure rebuild.

After decades leading developments in industry and enjoying new teams, technologies and challenges, one thing remained unresolved: as an industry, we rely so heavily on open source infrastructure, yet we are rarely able to give anything back to this precious ecosystem. FluidityWorks was founded to attempt to change that.

Our mission is to stay deeply immersed in commercial industry while advancing canonical fluid patterns through open source projects, creating a sustainable model where each workstream supports the other, monetarily or reputationally.

Forever Open

Open source is the understated foundation of the software economy, without it nothing is sustainable: not our large commercial ventures, not our prototype developments, not even our kids learning to code. Through OSI licensing and collective ownership our Forever Open policy guarantees that our open source projects will never be commercialised.

OSI Licensing

Our projects are, and will remain, released under OSI approved open source licenses.

Collective Ownership

We operate without contributor license agreements: the copyright of a project is collectively owned by all its contributors, and the license of a project cannot be changed without explicit consent from all its owners.

Lock the License

Each project includes a CUSTODIANS.md file which is a part of its source code: edits to this file constitute a very welcome project contribution. Simply add your name or alias to CUSTODIANS.md to ensure the license of a project you enjoy cannot change without your consent.

Our AI Approach

While we are fully equipped and happy to operate in environments without AI, we believe these tools are a genuine asset to software engineering when used thoughtfully. AI can accelerate our research, surface unconsidered options, and handle many routine coding tasks.

We don't believe in tokenmaxxing: leaning on AI to generate unscrutinised volume rather than engineered value. To us, valuable software models a problem and its constraints extremely well, is deeply understood by its users and engineers, and is often remarkably concise. Our goal is to engineer lasting value: solutions that teams can confidently maintain and reason about for years to come. AI does not change that bar.

For us, design and planning come first, while implementation and AI-assisted coding come second. Before reaching for AI coding tools, we establish a clear grasp of the problem, its constraints, and the shape of the solution we want to pursue. AI is a tool for iterating on those thoughts faster, allowing us to close the gap between design and production quickly while remaining deeply connected to the code.
